New Interaction Orders, new mobile publics?

This workshop at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Lancaster University explores the emergence of 'mobile publics', inspired by Goffman's studies of public places as the performative locus of social orders and William Holly Whyte's investigations of the social life of small urban spaces. We bring theory and empirical research, everyday lived practice, design, policy and politics together through collaborative analysis  of multi-sited, mobile, ethnographic or otherwise qualitative studies of behaviour in today's public spaces.

Patchworks Presents @FutureEverything

Explore the perils and possibilities of self-exploration through hacking, homebrew electronics and hands-on biostatistics. Is the “quantified self” a new means of empowerment or the first steps towards a dystopian, spreadsheet driven vision of the future?

Patchworks is a research collaboration between the community support group, Signposts, MadLab and Lancaster University exploring the health and communication needs of homeless people through the co-design of prototype tools using cheap, open source technology.

Patchworks FutureEverything workshop at MADLAB : patching-in and patching-out

A Patchworks  'Hackday'  at MADLAB will take place with volunteers from Signposts a homeless charity. The aim of the hack day is to start thinking about and co-designing a mobile device for 'disconnected' communities maybe monitoring and communicating health and new ways of keeping in touch. The idea is to create new open source, DIY networking tools for communities that meets their real day to day needs.

Patchworks

Patchworks is an eight-month research project to explore the health and communication needs of homeless people in Lancaster and Morecambe. Specifically, the project will explore how homeless people might co-design a prototype tool using cheap, open source technology that can help to monitor and communicate health and wellbeing.

The Away Day provided a great opportunity to find out about the Co-Is research areas relevant to the Catalyst project and to connect with people on a 1 to 1 basis. The Open Space sessions seemed an effective way to share research interests and a seminar series seems like a tangible research output.

Involved

The Involved project aims to connect communities, with the voluntary sector playing a key role in the process as it is often at the very core of community life. A connection will be created between individuals and organisations based on their geographic location. In the first instance it will be a web-based project, though as it develops in the longer term it will be adaptable to be a smartphone application, a touch screen panel in a public building etc. The ultimate aim of the project is that it will result in more active communities.

Local Trade: local wealth or can we all profit from being good?

Local Trade is one of two Catalyst launch pads and aims to create a loyalty trading system which records trades and tracks the trading patterns within the system to reward sustainable and locally beneficial trading behaviour in Lancaster. Following the global economic decline, Local Trade aims to ‘re-boot’ collaborative endeavours through stimulating altruistic behaviours and rewarding local creativity and innovation.
